Theme: Responding to God’s call

Text: Luke 1: 51-62

He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” (V59)

There are ties we may have built that are not easy to break away from. With so much investment in our career, relationship and other stuff, we may find it really difficult to change if the call demands it.

Jesus was calling out people to follow him, as our opening passage records. The first person just responds positively to follow Jesus wherever he goes. The second person wanted to go and bury his dead father first and the third wanted to first say a good-bye to his family. Jesus, in responding to the last two people questioned their priority and not the relationship. It was not a bad thing burying his father, neither was it a bad thing saying a good-bye, but because they had strong ties to what they had, they prioritised it over Christ’s call.

God’s call always challenges your priorities. His call requires that you sacrifice your priorities for His. He does this because He wants to constantly remind us He created his universe and He has His perfect plan at play in sustaining the universe.
