Theme: Be a blessing
Text: Genesis 12:1
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
Life becomes meaningful when it is lived to enforce the will of God in a man’s life. I am yet to think of someone who may tell me his purpose in life, as given by God, is to live for himself. If your purpose is self-centred, it can be argued it is not from God.
Abraham received a message from God to leave his native country, his relatives and his father’s family. He was to go to a land that he will be shown. Let’s pause for a minute. I can’t really explain how Abram knew God or how God spoke to him. But he still heard the message to leave his identity and security as a man to a place that he will be shown. He is not even in the know of what is at stake for him but departs as the Lord instructs him (V4). Paying attention to the instruction, he should have left his nephew Lot and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran. But he did not, amidst the uncertainties in the journey. Why? He was not interested in enjoying the blessings of the Lord alone, but also these other people may benefit from it.
Reverend Eastwood Anaba said and I paraphrase: the greatest form of spirituality is your philanthropism and social activism. When God has blessed you with wealth and possessions, do not forget the people you used to be in that same state with. Extend a helping hand to them.
